What is Rebound Congestion?
The overuse of stronger decongestants (containing oxymetazoline and xylometazoline) have been clinically proven to increase nasal congestion which is mostly more severe than the earlier bouts. Initially, these medications constrict or decrease the thickness of blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling. However, with overuse, the nasal tissues become less responsive, leading to increased congestion. This increased congestion is known as Rebound congestion and can be avoided by using stronger decongestants only when absolutely necessary.
